“HOW DOES MY BABY WANT his eggs this morning?”

“Over easy and soft as your honey pot,” I purred back at Betty. She got up and walked softly to the kitchen in her puffy tiger house shoes. When she brought the breakfast to the bed, she had garnished the plate with sprigs of parsley and sliced apples. Betty had switched Jerry Springer for Martha Stewart.

I should have known something was up when Betty started frying eggs and bacon for me. Sometimes she got up in the wee hours of the morning to drive to the Farmer’s Market and get their freshest big brown eggs. She’d come home and have the kitchen smelling like IHOP. For the past few days, everything was “ours,” “my baby,” and “my sweetness.” The strap-on unused gathered dust on the nightstand. A few of my favorite books littered the bed. I’d glance up and catch Betty smiling at me as I read. She even asked me to read a few passages to her. The Bluest Eye was her favorite. “Nuns quiet as lust,” and Betty was soon snoozing. She brought me tea to the bed and gave me pedicures. All of this made Bonnie suspicious. She shook her head and said Betty was up to something as she eased me out of her house looking from left to right as if she was expecting a tiger to pounce on us.
